We used to have a solution to this problem in the election process ones
and I don't know why this isn't pursued any more.
The list of candidates was presented to the members along with their 
statements one or two weeks prior to the election. Then a Q/A period
started when members had the opportunity to ask questions on the members
list and candidates had the opportunity to voice their views. This way 
when people felt there was a need to get more information it was 
possible to deal with this prior to the election - not during the 
election period in which no campeigning should actually happen any 
more.
