this sounds like a great idea!
I know that Jim Gettys has given talks on this issue
as he was one of the first who is still (or again 
after pausing for a while) involved with X.

Still this is very largely an issue of standpoint:
It depends who you ask what answer you will get.
Opinions and interpreation of what happened in the
early days differ. Just like interpretations of what
happened at XFree86 when it faltered would differ -
and that's a situation a lot of us still have a  
vivid recollection of.

So this may not be something for a Wikipedia article.
A number of people could write up what in their memory
happened and those documents could be collected. Still 
it's still hard to capture all the emotions and  
feelings at the time. For instance a lot of the things 
that happened in XFree86 behind the scenes are not 
really for public consumption.
